About Us
Peace Works!
New Bedord, MA
(508) 996-9660
The Peace Works! Project is modeled after the Harlem Children's Zone.
In May 2005 our group attended the Practitioners Institute at HCZ.
Peace Works! is a coalition of local service providers focused on building a sense of community in a selected neighborhood. Our efforts are concentrated in the west end of the city – specifically bounded by Rockdale Ave. and Cottage Street on the east and west and Hillman and Court Street on the north and south. We are interested in developing safe and peaceful neighborhoods for the youth of New Bedford.
In our efforts to develop safe and peaceful neighborhoods we plan to:
assess neighborhood needs,
provide innovative recreational activities for youth and their families,
organize and empower residents to be active members of the community,
create educational, rewarding and engaging opportunities for the youth.
Peace Works! is one of two initiatives created by the Hope Dialogue Committee. The Hope Dialogue Committee was formed on November 4, 2004 in response to the tide of violence that surged through the New Bedford community. The mission of the committee is to:
provide a new model of community collaboration to create change,
provide long-term solutions to help raise a new generation committed to conflict resolution and non-violence,
identify and develop emerging and existing leadership to help strengthen community resources, and create safer neighborhoods
